Meet Lili
The world of Lovelili
The founder of the LOVELILI brand, lover of travel, interior design and fashion. All these passions are intertwined and interact in her life. Lili invited us to her home and we will try to uncover the “secrets” of her style and inspiration, which is reflected not only in her handbag designs but also in the whole philosophy of the brand.
How long did you spend thinking about starting production in Italy and what preceded your decision?
I had the dream of starting my own brand in high school, where I studied clothing technology. However, the main impetus came a few years later, when I was visiting part of my partner’s family in faraway China. I found it to be a great opportunity to combine travel and work. After visiting several exhibitions and doing a thorough mapping of the market, I decided to commission the production of handbag prototypes according to my designs in one of the selected Chinese factories. The result and the quality of workmanship exceeded my expectations. After receiving the first order, there was a painful realization that the quality of the prototype and the final product are not the same in China. It was a big disappointment for me but I saw this experience as a valuable lesson that would push me forward. I now know that the seemingly easiest path may just be the most difficult. It was clear to me that I had to look elsewhere, change the overall strategy and philosophy of the brand. I understood that the only possible way was to follow the path of the highest quality.
Then you started manufacturing in Italy?
Yes. Thanks to good connections, I visited a major manufactory in Florence, Italy, the heart of Tuscany and the cradle of art, where the world’s best brands are created. Despite the fact that we are insignificantly small compared to these giants, the management of the manufactory willingly took us under its wings and has since enthusiastically supported our work. I knew it would be an expensive and difficult journey but I also knew that I was in the right place and this was where “my” handbags would be made.
“ I now know,
that the seemingly easiest path
may just be the most difficult“
How would you characterize your brand and work?
I create timeless models where premium quality is an absolute must. I try to introduce spontaneity and freedom to the classics, to “lighten” them a bit. Nevertheless, I would like our handbags to be timeless, not subject to rapidly changing trends and fashion dictates. Simply ones that you invest in with the knowledge of lasting value. Apart from the premium materials used, I put emphasis on the internal workmanship of the handbags, including such places that are not so visible. All metal components are colourfast, with more weight and the “sound” of quality. These are often saved on due to the higher purchase price, which is a big mistake.
Just because we offer timeless handbags in classic shapes and colours doesn’t mean we are boring. We focus on interesting details and our iconic heart stitching on fine leather is unmissable. Everyone knows it’s LOVELILI, without drawing attention using flashy signs and exaggeration.
So, you are not influenced by fashion trends and competition?
You are always, perhaps unconsciously, influenced a little by what you see around you. I think the best and right way is to stay in line with the trends but at the same time respect your style and originality. I’m not trying to “mass produce” but rather design something. I design each model in a way that makes me want to wear it myself.
Are you planning to present seasonal collections?
Since timelessness is an important essence of the LOVELILI brand, I decided not to present regular seasonal collections. It’s pointless to churn out large quantities of anything, it’s much better to stop, think and fine-tune every detail to create a unique piece of lasting value. Sustainability is very important to me. Although we hear more and more about it, we rarely see that this is really the case. Most brands just hide behind catchy words and gestures.
The textile industry is one of the biggest polluters on the planet. I don’t want to advise people to wrap themselves in paper but we do need to slow down a bit, choose quality items and forget about quantity. Likewise, people should think about their choice of material. Some prefer artificial leather to animal leather. That’s rubbish!!! Leather has always been and will be here. It is a by-product of the food industry. A natural material that belongs to nature and does not burden it. It’s up to people to treat the animals humanely throughout their lives and to make their departure is as painless as possible. Humanity still has a lot to learn in this regard. However, you need to use your head and not look for excuses.
“We need to slow down,
choose quality items
and forget about quantity”
What do you do in your free time?
I try to balance my busy work schedule with time spent with my family. This is really important to me and it’s also a kind of a relaxation. Improving the interior and garden brings me joy. Interior design is my passion.
What gives you the most inspiration when designing handbags?
I’m happy that I can often travel to Italy thanks to my work. I always try to take full advantage of this time not only to work but also to get to know the whole of Tuscany. The incredible beauty of the region, the delicious food and wine, and last but not least the famous Italian style have become an endless inspiration for me.
Then all those feminine pleasures like flowers, fashion… There’s a lot of it but I always feel the greatest stream of ideas and inspiration when I travel. When I come back, I have a lot of energy and that’s when most of the designs are created. I also like to browse lifestyle coffee table books, especially those on interior design and architecture. We also placed several of them in our showroom in the centre of Prague, where it is possible to flip through and buy them. My fondness for interior design is evident throughout the showroom space I designed. I wanted it to feel like Tuscany and I think I succeeded. The focal point is a large olive tree, with the ubiquitous wooden furniture adding to the cosy atmosphere. We have complemented our handbags with models from selected designers and brands of the same philosophy and quality recognized by LOVELILI. These include silk scarves, leather gloves and very exclusive models by the designer Gianni di Leo. Come and see for yourself, we look forward to your visit.
